Performance Boating is delighted to confirm the sale of the first of the new Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 380, which had its Worldwide launch at the Southampton Show just two weeks ago.
As you would expect this is a thoroughly modern cruising yacht with all of the benefits of modern yacht design. This new design is very much a blend of the hugely successful Sun Odyssey 349 and more recent Sun Odyssey 410, which has been the biggest selling 40-footer in the World since its launch.
Perhaps surprisingly the 380 features the fabulous sloping side decks, which if you haven’t experienced them are a remarkable innovation that truly make movement around the deck easier and safer. As in the bigger designs it doesn’t appear to impinge on the interior space at all and the design offers a 3-cabin twin head option, though the standard is a 2-cabin single head.
From a sailing aspect it has no backstay like the 349, which then allows the Performance version to have a square-top headsail to boost sail area and power. You can pretty much guarantee that this will be a sensational performer!
Another important feature of these modern designs are shoal draft keel options with no perceptible compromise in stability or performance. For cruising our East Coast a shoal draft of 1.56m opens up a lot of safe havens and cruising areas that may not be considered with standard draft yachts.
Another aspect of these modern high volume hull designs are cabins with fully rectangular beds. In fact the owners cabin of the 2-cabin version of the Sun Odyssey 380 has a full King sized double!
